Discover your Dosha

VATA

This might make sense to you with a Vata dominant constitution, or being bi-doshic with one of your dominant doshas being Vata. As I said before Vata is connected to the element of air and space, and these two can be in any living or non-living thing or being around us. Do you remember the example of the wind, being Vata quality? Just as the wind, you might be moving in any given direction on a daily basis. Being a Vata dosha type, you might be a creative, free-spirited person. The challenge to be in this really inspired state most of the time is being overwhelmed. You might feel that you have too many ideas to attend to at the same time, that you get overly excited for something new that adds to your long list of what you have previously drafted to achieve. This might make you feel worried or anxious about the future.

We see Vata show up in the body in all the airy spaces: in the joints, the lungs, the deep hollows of the bones. And it’s also in charge of the nervous system, which is exactly how to can have an effect on these areas of our system. When imbalance shows itself in a soft symptom or in a disease, what we can do is to balance the Vata in our body.

Symptoms might be tightness in the nerves, in the muscles particularly in the lower body; you might feel cracking joints (yes, when you have just woken up especially), or any nerve- or sensory disorder. Traveling, being on the go might induce this a lot more (think about air travel for example).

So what can you do when you have Vata in excess? We really want to ground. Putting together a routine that you love and feel inspired to do can really support Vata in the constant moving around. A simple things such as going for a walk or placing your bare feet on the ground also helps to discharge the nervous system for any excess stimulation and buzzing. Slow down, do a slow yoga flow and meditation.

And then you can stay in this beautiful cool breeze of inspiration, ideas and dreams that is whispering you all your new creative moves and not get too overwhelmed at the same time.

PITTA

Pitta people, let’s get down to business, what does this all mean? You are either Pitta dominant or bi-doshic with a Pitta being one of your dominant doshas. Pitta dosha is very much connected to the fire element, and a little bit of water, which makes - booom -steam. Ever felt like you have to let the steam out? We all feel you!

Fire has the power to ignite us, to motivate us, it also has the power to sustain us and it has the power to destroy everything that is in its path. As a Pitta person, you might be a motivated go-getter. A warrior with a razor sharp focus . But if there is too much Pitta going on in the system then you might feel irritable, maybe even a pushy or aggressive. Quick to fire, short-temper and a bit impatient.

We see the Pitta show up in the body in the digestive system or the digestive fire. A super fast metabolism is usually the case for Pitta types and yes, you might be hungry all the time. The ability to digest is really strong, and this also goes for thoughts, ideas, emotions, or external stimulation. Big capacity to digest life in general!

If there is too much Pitta, if there is any imbalance then we tend to see these things show up in the system as skin irritations, poor liver function and other digestive issues. As a Pitta person what you would want to focus on when in excess, is cooling and surrendering. These two words might feel like a cooling balm for you in such a moment.

What is going to help is literally taking time to chill out through the day. Take a regular brake, sit back, chill out and enjoy the view. In your diet, you can go for more cooling foods, avoiding spicy and stimulation food (that you might love incredibly). Keep on cooling and bring the hydration up, cooling the fire inside.

So that you can go and enjoy this forever burning fire in you with intensity and joy!

KAPHA

So, you are Kapha dominant in your dosha or you are bi-doshic with Kapha as one of your dominant doshas. What does that mean in depth? Kapha has many amazing qualities, some of the things we really need in our world at this moment in time. Kapha is being connected to the water and the earth element. As such it has the power, as mother earth, to endlessly support, nurture and connect us. As a Kapha dosha person these powers rest in you.

You are probably very loving, nurturing, compassionate and intuitive person. The challenge with Kapha dosha lies that as a Kapha person you might want to give and give and give to the point of depletion. You might see it as all your water is drying up until there nothing else to give from your cup. Your challenge is to keep your cup of self-love filled up so that there is something to give.

Kapha shows up in the body as all the connective tissues and connective fluids. This is including the synovial fluid, the fluid that runs through the spine and the joints and the fluids in the fat cells. Even the reproductive fluids which definitely connect us and support us in our survival as a species! This is also where we see imbalances or potential issues come up.

We might see it as excess weight being held. Kapha has the tendency to be stuck in a rut, in a routine or relationship that no longer serves the whole. So that holding onto stuff, holding onto emotions or literally what is held in those fat cells is what we might experience with Kapha dosha when there is an imbalance.

What else? Kapha is such a beautiful dosha! It might get a bad representation in our culture and be swept to the side. Don’t be misled. Kapha is so robust!

Kapha has the power to be highly sensitive but it also has a real resilience, a capacity to soldier on and keep going in whatever circumstance. True power.
